Point Ann

Mon 2nd June
We started the day with Jan’s Marilyn Monroe impression singing happy birthday to Mick for his 70th. I never thought I’d be living with a seventy year old bloke. Lucky, aren’t I!
After breakfast we packed some lunch and went into the Fitzgerald River National Park. It was about 50km to get to Point Ann where the whale viewing area is.  A lot of money has been spent on a new bitumen road for a good part of the way and a wide graded road for the rest. There are plans afoot to extend the road all the way to Hopetown which will open the area right up. The beaches and views are truly spectacular.
All along the way we were surprised by the diversity of vegetation and the large number of plants in flower.
At Point Ann, steps, walking paths and several viewing platforms have been constructed. There is a good barbecue area with gas barbecues and rings and there were ample tables, chairs and shade areas and toilets. Unlike the Head of the Bight lookouts that are up on a cliff, the beach is easily accessible by stairs; and further along the bay you can drive down onto the sand. Although there is a really nice camp area, we would never have fitted with our four vans. They were small campsites for one smaller van or a tent. We spent some time scanning the turquoise water of the bay before we saw some whales spouting. They were a fair way out though, and through binoculars could be seen breaching. We enjoyed our drive back, stopping to photograph some of the plant-life.

When we got back to Bremer Bay we drove out onto the sand. There is a huge beach with white sand that crackles under foot at the junction where the Wellstead Estuary meets Bremer Bay. Then we cooked Mick’s birthday tea of skipjack and finished off with scones, jam and cream that Jan had made in a circle and put sparklers on top. Treas and Woody had made fairy bread and we all wore party hats.
